Davis Cup for USTA juniors

The Road to the TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

7/30 - 14U USTA Team Event (70 points)

SSS went Davis Cup this weekend with the USTA L4 Team Event 14U, and what a smash hit. Thirty-two players duked it out in four teams with another twenty players on the wait list. The USTA knew what it was doing by introducing the new format. In a thrilling match that turned out to decide the championship, Blue defeated Green 8-4.

Players were scheduled for a singles match and a doubles match in a tie against each of the other three teams. With each match worth one point, and eight players on each team, each tie had twelve points at stake. (Eight singles matches and four doubles matches.)

Caleb Vargas dropped the first set for Blue against Green's Ramkrish Sai Patibandla but roared back to take the match tiebreaker 10-5. He also teamed with Ivanna Tuma Joy Canesa to outlast Patibandla and Daryana Skobeleva 8-7 in a tight tiebreaker in doubles.

For Green, Grace Shao held her own against Zoe Taylor in a match tiebreaker.

Many of the players were introduced to the Sweet Spotter Series for the first time. The champions all over around 19th place in the SSS Rankings by virtue of their victory, while Green's players sit around 45th, with their thirty-five points for second place.

Owing to the strength of the rosters and competitive balance, the champions were unable to make off with a perfect record. Red drew 6-6 with the titleholders, but they could not pull off the same feat against Green, falling to third place after the 7-5 loss.

The full tables now look like this.

Each weekend this spring and summer, Tennis Central is bringing you USTA and UTR tournaments at The Landon School. Earn points for advancing through each round, just like on the pro tours, and qualify for the TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP at season's end.
