The Road to THE TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP 2023
May 13 - USTA WTN 20-40 (12-18U)
What do you root for when you can't choose between two great warriors locked in an epic final? Some say for the heavens to open up.
It was the only thing that could come between Ilan Faraci and Jon Ozenci, both Incubator players who'd reached the final of the USTA WTN 20-40 event on Mothers' Day Weekend. Rain halted the final at 5-5.
Daphne Dunlap was able to finish just ahead of the storm, dispatching an in-form Paisley Fromer in style, 6-1. Fromer had been dominant and dropped only one game going into the final, while Dunlap had had to contend with Serena Provinse, who made it close at 6-3 in the semis.
The semifinal between Faraci and Spencer Weiss turned heads at 7-5, but it was not the most dramatic match of the day. That belonged to Bridget Zimmermann thanks to what seemed a routine opening round against Suhani Verma. It went to 9-7 in the set tiebreak to determine the match, and then Zimmermann took eventual semifinalist Lila Briskin-Watson to the limit before bowing out.
USTA draws meant that the Civil War between brothers had to be fought. Jon Ozenci dealt with his brother Deniz in the boys' semifinal. The two are duking it out among the rankings as well. The older Jon jumps to the top of the 12U rankings this week after his finals performance and others' dropping points from last year. He's also second at 14U and 16U, while Deniz follows not far behind in sixth in the 12U.
While there was minimal movement at 10U, Deniz hopped into fifth as Siena Auzoux, idle this week, kept the top spot. Lara Dabney, thanks to her performance here, gained five places to leap the highest and enter the Top 10.
Dunlap and Fromer cannoned up the leaderboard. The finalists now sit in 17th and 35th at 16U. Paisley jumped forty spots to get there. Faraci entered the Top 10 at 18U and 14U but is just on the outside looking in at 16U.
Remember the newly added feature to the rankings: the Plus / Minus, which will tell you how far up or down the player has moved within the last week.
