Blue Glove Open: Fall 2022, Championship Week
An unbeaten season for the first time in BGO history marks William Green's laurels in a special way following Championship Weekend. His two wins, including defeating Ariana Ipakchi in the top Group Final, make him Player of the Week for a record third time in one season, as well.
Ipakchi and Yael Lan seesawed for first place the majority of the year, but Green went on a winning spree at season's end to collect the wins he needed to qualify for the final. Ipakchi rose to the challenge and bettered her previous two attempts against Green, falling this time 8-3 in the final.
There is still one race to be decided in a much anticipated affair---Green and Lan are due to play in the first-ever Regular Season Championship because of their 11-0 and 9-1 records at the top of the overall table.
Much like the World Cup's semifinals, a buildup of dramatic, exhilarating play culminated in rather decisive, dominant final performances. In Group C, David Gong marched to an 8-0 win to take gold against Elina Ipakchi. Gong moved up to third in the Power Rankings after that display.
Rain washed out the middle of the day's action on Sunday as well as its opening match, but the courts dried in time for the Group D Final. Alex Cana earned promotion and the championship with a statement 8-2 victory over Ted Wang, who finishes the season in fourth place behind Finn Koski and Shiloh Auzoux. Both, fittingly enough, went 1-1 this weekend with the medal positions on the line and grabbed tight, one-game victories.
The three champions climb to the top eight spots in the Power Rankings, with Lan still ahead by a slim margin of three points over Green---another distinction very likely at stake in the Regular Season Championship to be played soon.
