Mathura, Lan win silverware

Blue Glove Open: Week 18

JT Mathura and Jeremy Chud were pals at the Travel Team Plus Awards earlier in the day, but they had to set it aside come that evening for the Group A Final of the Winter BGO Season. Mathura won 8-3 to claim the championship.

Mathura is now a name set among Darius Vedadi, Daniel Goldblatt, and Rex Bondi as champions of the Blue Glove Open's top group. No player has yet won multiple titles---it is almost as elusive as tennis or golf major championships.

Indeed the lower seeds in both finals took some direction from the NCAA tournament and ousted the favorites (though perhaps not the betting favorites), with Yael Lan earning promotion to Group A for next season after her 8-4 victory over Renata Cavallo in the Group B Final.

Lan and Mathura earn Player of the Week honors for their championships. Lan joins Valentine Parrella and Sasha Brooks as newly promoted Group A players.

Speaking of promotion, it was merely Cavallo's first season as a Group B player following her own promotion there at the end of the fall season. Many players trace a meteoric rise in the BGO, and she is one.

Kiran Mathura won twice in convincing fashion to argue that his missing the final was only due to his total number of matches played.

In the lower divisions, both finals had to be postponed due to player availability---only the second instance of that happening, the last being the Group A Final between Ivy McConarty and Darius Vedadi. Finalist Julia Ross fell in her challenge to David Gong while she waited for final, now scheduled for April 8.
