Radmenesh-Mathura semi for the ages

The Road to THE TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP 2023

11/12 USTA 10U, 12U

11/13 UTR 14U

As the fall season winds to a close with the Year-End Finale WTN Doubles event in December, the action was relentless over the weekend.

Ashvin Pinnamaraju entered his first Sweet Spotter Series tournament in style, dropping only three games over five matches to take the Group 1 title at 10U. Pierson Holahan, in his second event, edged out a decisive 4-3 victory over Adam Tehrani in what became the de facto championship match for Group 2.

At the 12U, Sebastian Johnson and Dakshesh Karthigayan marched to championships like conquering armies. No player could take more than two games from either.

Meanwhile, Sunday's UTR 14U event drew a large crowd as well. Three different champions emerged in the Verified UTR setting that allowed for only semifinals and finals under limited daylight.

Serena Provinse and Carter Mills were not pushed into too high a gear in their claims to the Draw B and Draw C titles, while one of the best matches of the day came in the Draw A semifinal between Kiran Mathura and Reza Radmenesh. They split sets 4-3 and 4-3, then played to a 10-7 tiebreak for the spot in the final. Radmenesh won it but could not match that level of play in the final. Arthur Rosenstein won the Draw A championship.

Given the sun setting much earlier in the evening at November tournaments, Sweet Spotter Series director Michael Augsberger lamented how the committee could not organize a final among the group bracket winners. "We have to balance the need for Verified UTR matches, which take longer than our previous group stage sets, against the time and court constraints," he said.

"But we've actually been asked to do a form of this tournament anyway by many players, who want to play more similar-rated players right away instead of deep in a tournament. It's always evolving, and like pro golf does, we try different formats through the year to benefit everyone's strengths."

The full tables now look like this.

Each weekend until Thanksgiving, Tennis Central is bringing you USTA and UTR tournaments at Holton-Arms School. Earn points for advancing through each round, just like on the pro tours, and qualify for the TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP at season's end.

Bigger events offer more points, with the TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP offering the most, as well as prizes.
