Six matches come down to the wire

Six of the matches this weekend went down to the final games, with players pushing to get across the line before their opponents could.

Renata Cavallo jumped to 4-0 as Group C leader in the opening contest that set the standard for the rest of the weekend. Cole Piraino took her the distance, and then turned right around and played a marathon second set---this one a loss to Jack Mearns, 6-5.

Mearns also went back-to-back, winning 8-5 against Sina Dinan.

The drama resumed in Sunday when both locations' opening matches offered nail-biting suspense. Lily Farahi and Adriana Gross started their seasons at Northwest DC and Hamlet, respectively, with matches decided by the slimmest of margins. Gross took down Sasha Brooks, while Cavallo extended her unbeaten streak to five with the victory over Farahi.

Last, Bora Barclay surged to second place in Group A. The 8-6 set against Jack Mearns, coupled with a drubbing of brother Luke, brings Barclay within three points of Daniel Goldblatt in the table.

Drama ensued elsewhere; Annecy Tran recorded her first win at the BGOs in a 8-3 win against newcomer Madueno in his second match.
