Another Lan-Mulita classic

Blue Glove Open: Winter 2022-23, Week 13

Previous finalist Yael Lan has a knack for eking out close matches, and this time it earned her the Player of the Week honors. The match of the weekend took place between Lan and old rival Tomas Mulita, both finding themselves on the outside looking in at the title race but pushing no less passionately for precious placement in Group A.

It went to a tiebreak, which Lan dominated 7-1 to claim the win. It puts Lan in fourth place and just under .500 for the winter with only three weekends of play remaining.

At the top of the table, Alvaro Orlove proved why it's been so difficult on Lan and Mulita after stellar seasons the past few months. Another two wins for him against top players cemented his place in the final in two weeks.

One of his victims, David Gong, and Lan are chasing Spencer Weiss at nine wins, five clear of the field. A lot of play over the next two weekends could get them the requisite victories, but Weiss sits in the catbird seat. It looks like Weiss v Orlove is the imminent final.

Group B's Sophia Yu served up an emphatic win over Elina Ipakchi and demonstrated the likely high level of play the latter's almost sure promotion next season will introduce her to. The win secured first place for Yu, while Ipakchi remains comfortably in first in Group C, while Nicholas Kidd and Jake Snow battle it out for that second finals place.

Kidd and Lara Isler both notched important wins to lift them or keep them in finals spots. The race in Group D is anyone's, as Isler leads the pack while Cornelia Touw sits only one game behind Sidney Immergut for second place.

Decision Day arrives April 1-3, followed by Championship Weekends over Easter and April 14-16. The division races are heating up!
