'Fo Fo Fo' for Alvaro

Blue Glove Open: Winter 2022-23, Week 9

Like the Philadelphia 76ers' Moses Malone once predicted, Alvaro got his four wins in style this weekend and cemented his place atop the Group A leaderboard. Even more impressive was how the undefeated titan closed it out---Solomon Ravitz battled him to a 7-4 tiebreak in the eleventh-hour match on Sunday, but even he could not topple Orlove.

Jumping to 8-0 this season, Orlove extends his lead to three games over Spencer Weiss and claims the Player of the Week honors yet again.

David Gong and Alexander Toker-Katskee both also pushed Orlove in closer 8-4 losses. The next best match of the weekend, indeed, went to Ravitz in his 8-6 victory over the newly promoted Gong as both players are making the step up to challenge themselves with sterner competition.

Other tight fixtures included Elina Ipakchi's narrow 8-6 defeat of newcomer Colin Wiltbank, who has hovered between groups---able to make splashes against Group C's top player, but also succumbing to the barrages of highly-schooled Group D Incubator players also making the step up in class. Both Cornelia and Vaughn Touw overcame Wiltbank in back-to-back matches, placing the former in a finals position for the first time.

Meanwhile Ipakchi, like Orlove above, tightened her grip on Group C. Nicholas Kidd, idle this week, sits two games below her.

The other dramatic finish belonged to Sophia Yu, who handed Jake Snow his first loss and captured a finals place herself for now with just weeks left in the winter season. Here 2-2 record ties her with Alexandru Cana for first place in Group B, with Cana ahead having not lost a game to any group competitor.
