Kidd narrowly wins championship preview

Blue Glove Open: Winter 2022-23, Week 15

What an amazing preview of the Group C Final played this past weekend. Nicolas Kidd won the tiebreaker 7-5 to edge past Elina Ipakchi and be named Player of the Week.

In doing so Kidd staved off a hard-charging Ted Wang, who did all he could to defeat Shiloh Auzoux to earn his sixth win. But with Kidd at eight wins after his thriller with Ipakchi, the former kept his final spot. The two will do it all over again this week, this time for the championship.

Ipakchi was in no distress of falling out of the final spot. Neither was Alvaro Orlove or Spencer Weiss in Group A, although with banner weekends Ariana Ipakchi and Luke Mearns might have caught Weiss. They did enough damage, Mearns defeating Weiss in their face-off 8-5, but they also traded wins against each other. In the end Weiss finished three games clear of Ipakchi, while Mearns climbed all the way to fourth place.

Only one Group D match meant the status quo remained undisturbed atop the standings. Though a number of players might have thrown some fuel on the fire, in the end Lara Isler will meet Sidney Immergut as expected.
