Blue Glove Open: Winter 2022-23, Week 7
Two wins led Alvaro Orlove to the top of the standings for the first time in Group A. The perennial winner has finally broken through to the top echelon, and all the sweeter it is after a long absence due to injury. Defeating top-ranked Spencer Weiss and another touted contender in Chase Velasquez this weekend, Orlove wins Player of the Week honors.
The league welcomed two new players, including one who earned the rare win in a first-ever match. Lara Isler grabbed that honor by defeating Allison Tran in Group D play, 8-3. Colin Wiltbank put on a tough showing before falling to Sophia Yu for her first win of the campaign in three tries.
Yael Lan and Tomas Mulita battled yet again to a 7-5 victory for Lan, though given the success of Orlove and Weiss, they've been fighting for fourth place. The win places Lan just two games away from the top spot.
David Gong, meanwhile, having won Group B and promotion in the fall, moves into third place ahead of Luke Mearns in Group A. Though he will face stiff competition, it is what the Incubator star would prefer in order to improve faster. He is joined by Ilan Faraci, another Incubator player winning USTA titles yet to play a Group A match.
Alexander Toker-Katskee earned his first win of the winter as well in a hotly contested 6-5 match, the second of a doubleheader for Velasquez on Sunday. The latter has had the misfortune of meeting only top brass so far and certainly will see the record round out once others' strength of schedule starts to match his.
