Radmanesh wins in winter debut

Blue Glove Open: Winter 2022-23, Week 8

Reza Radmanesh now holds the record for most time elapsed between BGO victories. His last win took place in 2020, a 7-5 result against Carter Mills. Nine hundred and five BGO matches have been played since then.

Three years later, he claims Player of the Week honors in his return after by defeating Incubator strongman and the reigning Group B champion David Gong, promoted to Group A and challenging for the title. Gong may have to contend with Radmanesh for that now after their 8-6 thriller.

However, it was Spencer Weiss who returned to the Group A pole position when Ariana Ipakchi replaced Alvaro Orlove as his primetime opponent and he won, 8-4. Weiss's five wins are enough to put him in the lead again. Gong and Orlove trail by just one game. Radmanesh may have the impressive victory and the skill to top the group, but he sits four games back with just one played.

Gong also impressed in his first weekend in Group A play, outlasting Jai Arora 8-5. His loss to Radmanesh was his first all season. It will be interesting to see the newcomers challenge Orlove, Weiss, and William Green, who retains his perch in the Elo Power Rankings handily, though Gong has moved up to third.

Lara Isler has taken solid control of Group D with a decisive win this weekend, while Nicolas Kidd was promoted to Group C and trails only Elina Ipakchi. Kidd went 1-1 on the weekend, ousting Ted Wang but falling to newcomer Colin Wiltbank, whom Ipakchi defeated in her only match on Saturday.

The second-closest match of the slate was Devin Leung's opening win over Lily Venzke, 7-5.

The rain made sure that the only competition held on Sunday was the Super Bowl, washing out an anticipated Mearns-Gong matchup.
