Mearns wins thriller over Cole

Blue Glove Open: Fall 2022, Week 5

Luke Mearns returned to the BGO in style this weekend, defeating rising star Ben Cole 8-7 in a thrilling match at the top of the overall tables. It was a sumptuous Saturday afternoon feast that earns Mearns Player of the Week honors for Week 5.

Joining the league a bit later, he still trails the leaders---everyday players Yael Lan, Ariana Ipakchi, Tomas Mulita---by at least three games, but it could become a dramatic chase if he is able to play more often or in the evenings when winter sets in.

The usual Primetime crew also produced interesting action. Another 8-7 match was dueled between Jake Snow and Elina Ipakchi for Snow's first win of the season. Yael Lan retook the group lead with another razor-thin victory over Ariana Ipakchi.

The league welcomed Spencer Weiss, certainly a close runner-up for Player of the Week on the strength of his two wins over top Primetime talent. At 2-0 he may have a chance to race up the leaderboard before fall is over.

Group D had some shaking up. Finn Koski grabbed the reins with a 4-2 record after setting aside his loss to a strong Kevin Parvizian to defeat Kate Johnson on Sunday. Meanwhile Shannon Bu earned her first-ever BGO victory, a 6-4 success against newcomer Andrew King, who jumped right in with two matches this weekend. That puts Ted Wang, Shiloh Auzoux, and Allison Tran on Koski's heels, albeit with a two-game cushion.
